project description
The Horrell Group designed the renovation of the Microbiology Building at the University of Tennessee, formerly referred to as the Pathology Building. This project was a ten-year, nine-story, phased upgrading of the existing laboratory building. Organizationally, the finished space includes flexible plan laboratory space with associated offices and meeting rooms on each floor. An unusual approach to this renovation was to construct permanent utility chases outside the building from the basement to the roof and renovation proceeded from the top downward. Thus, by connecting the renovated space to the new services from the roof level mechanical and maintaining the un-renovated lower floor's service from below, we were able to proceed with the progressive phases of the work with minimal disruption of the on-going experiments.
