Gymnasium Arch Repair
One of the more interesting projects for the Department of the Navy, was the repair of the arches at the gymnasium. This building housed several full sized basketball courts. The structure was made up of laminated wood arches at 16 feet on center, spanning 110'-0." The 2'-3" x 7" arches were 44 feet tall at their center. The arches were exposed to high levels of moisture from the boiler room, as well as, to termites, which led to deterioration at the base of the arches. The solution was to temporarily shore the arches, remove the damage portion of arch, and replace it with a metal prosthetic.
