The Memphis & Shelby County Airport Authority commissioned HGA as part of a joint venture with Self-Tucker Architects to redesign Security Checkpoint B.

HGA's program included the following
  • expanding Checkpoint B to increase the number of clearance lanes
  • building addition for expanded tenant space (5,160 s.f.) and additional baggage level space
  • adding a clerestory structure at Checkpoint B to introduce natural light (2,135 s.f. area)
  • family and pet restrooms
  • adding an escalator leading directly from Checkpoint B exit to the Baggage B pick-up
Self Tucker's portion of the project was to relocate existing tenants to allow for the Checkpoint B expansion.

Security Checkpoint B has grown from a slender corridor, in 1970, to the 11,000 square foot area it is today (existing space was 5,400 s.f.). The growth of Memphis International Airport and the security equipment upgrade to full-body scanners drove the expansion. Tenants had to be relocated to provide space for the additional lanes and equipment. Tenant work included Hudson News, Sunglass Hut and Harley Davidson.
Checkpoint B is at the center of the Memphis airport and at the intersection of major pedestrian paths. The clerestory was added directly over the intersection, adding volume and natural light to a congested space.

As with construction at any airport, security and circulation are a big concern during construction. The construction phase was extended significantly in order to maintain pedestrian traffic flow and TSA security requirements.
